A small plane went down in a Simi Valley neighborhood Saturday afternoon, killing two people and a dog onboard and damaging two houses, officials confirmed.
As fire crews tackled the blaze, police closed surrounding roads and advised people to steer clear. A column of smoke was visible above a home in the Wood Ranch community, about 50 miles from downtown Los Angeles.
Initial reports mentioned one death, but by Saturday evening, Simi Valley Police stated that the pilot, a passenger, and a dog were all killed in the crash.
As of Sunday, no information had been shared about the people inside the Van’s RV-10, a kit-built aircraft, and the cause of the crash remained unclear.
The aircraft struck the backyard and dining room of Arman Hovakemian’s home. He told the Los Angeles Times he was doing yard work when he noticed the plane circling lower over the hillside neighborhood. He rushed inside to alert his wife, Armineh, and grab their Pomeranian, Koko, before escaping. Moments later, the fuselage crashed into the exact spot where he had just been standing.
