A student brought a firearm to a Marina Del Rey school Wednesday, prompting a lockdown after the weapon was discharged, LAUSD officials said.
LAUSD reports that a gun accidentally discharged inside a classroom at Westside Global Awareness Magnet when a student’s backpack hit the floor; the student is now being sought.
“The bullet didn’t hit anybody,” said a parent who participated in a Zoom meeting following the incident. “It ricocheted around the class and fell on the ground.”
A video conference was held with parents to discuss the gun incident and confirm no injuries occurred. Authorities were notified immediately after the discharge.
At 9:11 a.m., parents were informed of the incident by text, with a second update coming at 10:40 a.m., and an automated voice message sent to all parent and guardian contacts.
The student suspected of bringing a gun to campus has been identified, and both law enforcement and school officials are actively searching for him.
